At this point of the story, a Norse warrior stay on his own on the bridge of Stamford, facing the entire Saxon army, to hold them back and earn some time for the Viking armies to organise.
Tales tell that the Saxons lost a lot of warriors against this lone man, and had to treacherously kill him from a boat under the bridge to continue their way.
